We no longer accept applications for any position not submitted through the online TalentEd Recruit & Hire  System.  If you have submitted a paper application in the past, you will need to complete an application using our online application process.

What you will need to apply for a position using the online application process:
The application contains several pages and will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete on your initial visit. You will have a chance to review and make changes before submitting.
 
Before you begin, be prepared with the following information:
  •  User Name and Password:     
    This will be created on your initial visit.  Record and protect this information for future use.  Your user name and password will be needed each time you enter the system. Once this is set up, you will be able to apply for a position in any school that uses the TalentEd Recruit & Hire Application Software.
  • Email address: 
    This will be used for future correspondence.  If you do not have an email address, you can get a free one from one of several providers. Some popular ones are Google Mail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail.
  • Social Security Number:   
    This will be used for background checks and payroll purposes.
  • References (at least 3):
    Include their current address, phone number, and email.  NOTE:  This information may be used to verify your employability. Previous Work History.  Include dates of employment, current company name, address, phone number, and supervisor’s name and email address.   NOTE:  This information may be used to verify your employment history and employability.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER:
 
Welcome to the Substitute Teacher Application process.

Substitute Teacher applications are accepted on a as needed basis. Orientations are conducted late September through March (as needed). 
 
The steps to be considered for Substitute teaching with Kearney Public Schools are outlined below.
 
1.       Certification – Generally, a Teaching or Substitute Certificate. Local certificates are only issued in special
          circumstances.
2.       Application – Complete the online Substitute application (TalentEd Recruit & Hire).
3.       Credential file or Letters of Recommendation and Transcripts – attach to the online application or have
           sent to the Human Resources office, 310 W 24th St, Kearney, NE 68845.
4.       The Application File is reviewed to determine if applicant meets the substituting needs of the school district.
5.       Substitute Training Program – When instructed by Human Resources, complete and pass the training
           program through (STI) and submit SubDiploma™ for application file.
6.       Background check – receive clearance through the background check process.
7.       Substitute Orientation

CERTIFICATION
 Kearney Public Schools Substitute Teachers must hold a valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate. The Certificate may be a Teaching certificate or a Substitute Teaching certificate.  Local Substitute Teaching certificate are issued by request only.  Applicants must contact the Human Resources office to see if their endorsements qualify.
 
·APPLICATION
The online Substitute application through TalentEd Recruit & Hire must be completed to be considered for substituting. We no longer accept paper applications, only applications submitted through the online system.
 
·         CREDENTIALS/TRANSCRIPT
Please request from your college/university an official copy of your transcripts and credential file be sent to the Human Resources Department. If you do not have an active credential file, we will need to have the official transcript(s) from your college/university and three (3) letters of recommendation.
 
·         YOUR APPLICATION FILE
A Substitute application file will be established for you and to be considered for substitute teaching must contain the following:

                                (1) Completed Online KPS Application
                                (2) Credential File or Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
                                (3) Transcripts

Once the file is complete it will be reviewed by Human Resources. You will only be contacted if your application is complete and meets the substituting needs of the school district. It is your responsibility to make sure the necessary items are on file with the KPS Human Resources office.

 After the review process, information regarding the Substitute Training Program will be emailed to you. A description of the program is below.
 
·         SUBSTITUTE TRAINING PROGRAM
As of January 1, 2012, Kearney Public Schools requires new substitutes complete the Substitute Teacher Training Program designed by the Utah State University Substitute Teaching Institute (STI). This training program will be part of the KPS substitute application process. 

The application process begins with training in classroom management, teaching strategies, planning, and other instructional skills and procedures. Substitute applicants will be required to complete and pass the online training assessment, SubOrientation™ and SubSkills Training™.

All substitute applicants will be charged by STEDI.org the $39.95 cost of the training and may pay online by credit card, or by check, or money order. The training fee provides the applicant online access for a year to:

              (1) The twenty-five (25) minute SubOrientation™ video.

              (2) The online Substitute Teacher Handbook which contains both audio and video selections to
                   enhance understanding of the principles presented.

              (3) A variety of downloadable forms, reports, and over 75 activities that can be used in the classrooms. 

              (4) The online SubAssessment™ which is designed to “assess” or evaluate how well the material has
                   been mastered.

The training may only be taken over the Internet and includes 6-10 hours of interactive SubOrientation™ and SubSkills ™ training. If you prefer not to study at a computer, you may purchase a handbook for an additional $19.95. It takes an average of thirty minutes to complete each of the five Sub Assessment™ training sections. 

Candidates may take the SubAssessment™ a maximum of four times, to obtain a passing score of at least 85%.

Once training is completed, applicants should print a copy of their SubDiploma™ and provide it to the Kearney Public Schools Human Resource office (310 W 24th St, Kearney NE 68845) or email it to dbosard@kearneycats.com

Substitute Training Program Frequently Ask Questions

Completion of the SubOrientation™ and SubSkills Training™ are not guarantees to being hired by Kearney Public Schools for substitute teaching.
 
·         .BACKGROUND CHECK
New substitute applicants, those who have been designated inactive (longer than one year) and those who have never substituted for Kearney Public Schools, will be required to complete pre-employment background screenings.
 
·         ORIENTATION
Once the background checks have been completed with the appropriate agencies and the candidate receives clearance for employment, a substitute orientation will be scheduled with Human Resources. All substitute applicants will be required to schedule and attend an employee orientation class before entering the classroom as a substitute. Orientation classes are scheduled and conducted by HR staff and the sessions will be held as needed October through March.
