Kearney High School students are buckling their seatbelts! In November, the Click It, Don't Risk It program checked KPS students when leaving the campus and 81% of those checked were wearing their belts compared to 68% across the state.
The statewide "Click It, Don't Risk It" started a new high school seatbelt campaign "Come Home Safe" and Kearney High School is participating.
In a kickoff for the campaign, Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy and local law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of seatbelt usage.
According to the "Click It...Don't Risk It" website teenagers account for 7% of the licensed drivers in Nebraska, but they account for 25% of reported crashes. They account for 43% of crashes where speed was the main cause. At the same time, young people 16 to 24 years old had the lowest observed seat belt usage rate of any other age group in 2006. More than 1 in 5 do not use their safety belt, and in some parts of Nebraska, fewer than 1 in 3 buckle up.
At KPS, we want our students to Come Home Safe!
