Kearney, NE — Kearney Public Schools (KPS) is pleased to announce the return of Dr. Kent Edwards, former Superintendent of KPS, who will rejoin the district as Associate Superintendent following the departure of Dr. Chris Loofe.
The search process consisted of four external applicants including Edwards who all had either central office administration or Superintendent experience. One candidate accepted a Superintendent position in a different district and withdrew from consideration. The other three candidates, including Edwards, interviewed with a KPS administrative team with Edwards being selected to return to the district in the Associate Superintendent role.
Edwards, who previously served as Superintendent of Kearney Public Schools from 2016-2022, brings a wealth of experience and deep knowledge of the district to this role. His leadership during his tenure as Superintendent was marked by significant achievements, including developing the Hanny Arram Center for Success and leading the district through the COVID pandemic.
Edwards initially hired Jason Mundorf as Associate Superintendent during his time as Superintendent, recognizing Mundorf’s leadership potential and commitment to educational excellence. Now, in an interesting full-circle moment, Superintendent Mundorf is hiring Edwards to serve as Associate Superintendent. This unique dynamic highlights the mutual respect and shared vision between these two leaders.
After retiring in 2022, Edwards realized that retirement lacked the sense of purpose he craved. "I missed the daily opportunities to make a difference," Edwards shared. "Retirement had its appeal, but I quickly found that I needed a sense of purpose. Returning to Kearney Public Schools allows me to contribute to a district I care deeply about. I am excited to resume working with the outstanding educators, staff, students, and families who make this district unique,” said Edwards. “KPS has always held a special place in my heart, and I look forward to supporting and serving Mr. Mundorf and his goals for the continued growth and success of KPS.”
Superintendent Jason Mundorf expressed enthusiasm about Edwards’ return, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Edwards back to Kearney Public Schools. His extensive experience and familiarity with our district and the leaders he will oversee will ensure a seamless transition and continued focus on our mission to provide exceptional educational opportunities for all students. Having worked with Dr. Edwards, many of us know firsthand the experience, vision, and excellence he brings to our district team. His return to the district will benefit our operations, various leaders, and the educational programs and services offered to our students.”
Edwards’ return as Associate Superintendent comes at an essential time as KPS continues to advance strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing student achievement, supporting educators, and strengthening community partnerships as the district begins developing a new strategic plan for the future.
